An Activity Directory site is a region of a network that has high bandwidth connectivity.
A site is a collection of one or more subnets connected by high speed links.
A site may span multiple domains.
A domain may span multiple sites. Sites are used for the following functions:
To optimize replication for speed and bandwidth consumption between domain controllers
To locate the closest domain controller for client logon, services, and directory searches
To direct DFS client to the server in the site
To optimize the replication of Sysvol
